California Health Advocates joined 359 disability and aging organizations in urging Congress to reject any further cuts to Medicaid.
The letter, addressed to Senate and House leadership from both parties, tells Congress to exclude any further funding cuts or harmful changes to Medicaid from any legislation — and to instead reinvest in the program that millions of Americans depend on for their health, safety, and independence.
The urgency is real. The $900+ billion in Medicaid cuts from H.R. 1 are already taking effect — and the consequences are unfolding:
- 🏥 Hospitals are laying off workers and shuttering units
- 🚪 Providers are closing
- 🏠 At least 9 states are already considering significant cuts to home and community-based services (HCBS) — the programs that help older adults and people with disabilities live independently in their own homes
- 📋 Over 600,000 people are already on Medicaid waiting lists for home-based care — even before these cuts hit
The letter makes clear that HCBS growth is not a problem — it’s a success story, the result of decades of bipartisan federal and state policy designed to shift care away from costly institutions and into people’s homes and communities. Cutting it now would undo that progress and cause irreparable harm.
Critically, this is not a partisan issue. The letter notes that 97% of voters say Medicaid is important in their communities, and 90% of voters across all political parties — including 88% of Republicans — support steady or increased funding for home and community-based services.
California Health Advocates stands firmly with the hundreds of organizations calling on Congress to protect Medicaid and the people who depend on it.
