Welcome Ben Winker – New Community Outreach & Engagement Specialist Joins CHA/SMP Team

We have some good news to share. Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Ben Winker, our newest staff member to join our CHA/SMP team.

Ben is our new Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist. Prior to joining our team, he was the HICAP Program Manager at the Area 1 Agency on Aging (A1AA) in Eureka, representing Humboldt and Del Norte counties for the past four years. Ben joined the Agency in 2019 as a HICAP counselor and Assistant Manager, taking over the Program Manager position at the beginning of 2020.

Ben has focused his passions working for healthy communities, waste reduction, energy efficiency, community building and sustainable development. He currently serves as the Board of Directors Chair for Zero Waste Humboldt. Ben holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Sustainable and Healthy communities with a Minor in Native American Studies. 

For CHA SMP, he is responsible for developing and executing outreach and engagement strategies to educate Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers, and the general public about healthcare fraud, errors, and abuse. This role involves collaborating with statewide partners, planning and attending community events, workshops, and conducting fraud presentations, as well as building relationships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to promote the mission of the SMP program.

Karen Joy Fletcher

Our blogger Karen Joy Fletcher is CHA’s Communications Director. With a Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley, she is the online “public face” of the organization, provides technical expertise, writing and research on Medicare and other health care issues. She is responsible for digital content creation, management of CHA’s editorial calendar, and managing all aspects of CHA’s social media presence. She loves being a “communicator” and enjoys networking and collaborating with the passionate people and agencies in the health advocacy field. See her current articles.
