What We Do
California Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is a grant-funded project administered by California Health Advocates. It is funded by the federal U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), U.S. Administration for Community Living. California SMP, and all SMPs around the country, empower and assist people with Medicare and Medicaid to avoid, detect, and report healthcare fraud. We work to both protect beneficiaries and help preserve the integrity of the Medicare and Medicaid programs by recovering and avoiding the billions of dollars typically lost to healthcare fraud each year.
Our Staff
We Love Serving Our Community
We’re passionate about making a difference and preventing Medicare fraud. Contact us if you have any questions and/or would like to collaborate on fraud prevention and education.
Our Focus
Funded by the Administration for Community Living, SMPs nationwide focus their work on three main areas
Outreach and Education
SMP provides free group educational presentations and webinars on Medicare fraud and the latest scams. We also provide exhibits at events, such as health fairs, and fraud counseling to beneficiaries. We have an extensive library of written resources to educate on fraud prevention.
Beneficiary Complaints
Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers, and family members call SMP with their complaints and we first determine whether or not fraud, errors, or abuse is suspected. If suspected, we report the case to the appropriate state and federal agencies for further investigation.
Volunteers
SMP has programs in every state and we make the difference we do thanks to our robust team of volunteers. As face-to-face contact is most effective for education and sparking positive change, SMPs nationwide recruit and teach nearly 5,000 volunteers every year to help in these efforts.
