Need a New Social Security Card? You Can Do It Online

Did you know that now in 40 states across the county, including California, you can request a new Social Security card online? This is a fast, secure and convenient service currently available to 86% of the population. Over 2 million people have already used this online service.

In California, if you own a California driver’s license or a state-issued identification card, are requesting only a replacement card and no other changes, and you meet a few other certain requirements, you can use Social Security’s free online service from anywhere by going through their my Social Security portal. You’ll need to create a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount/.

Is It Safe?
Yes. Social Security protects your information by using strict identity verification and security features. The application process has built-in features to detect fraud and confirm your identity. Once you have a personal account, simply follow the instructions to replace your Social Security card. In many cases, even if you lost your card, you may not need a replacement. Most of the time, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough.

Visit Social Security’s website for more information on requesting your replacement Social Security card online, and what the requirements are in your area at www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/.
