July 30th is Medicare’s 56th birthday and it is indeed a day to celebrate. Currently, 63.1 million Amercians are enrolled in this federal health insurance program that is available to most people 65 years of age and older and those younger with a disability, regardless of income, health status or medical history. It was enacted 56 years ago on July 30, 1965 with two primary goals: to protect people from catastrophic hospitalization costs and to encourage people to seek out primary care.
Medicare has greatly succeeded in meeting these two goals, as well as in narrowing the health care gap between rich and poor and whites and people of color. And, with Medicare’s Original fee-for-service program, beneficiaries can see almost any doctor or hospital as long as they accept Medicare.
Over the last five decades, Medicare has also greatly expanded its coverage (and complexity). While it certainly has its flaws, its importance in keeping people out of poverty due to catastrophic hospital bills, and guaranteeing a large portion of our population health insurance coverage is huge.
So let’s celebrate! 🙂
And we also invite you to celebrate the good work of my team here at California Health Advocates! 🙂 Yes, Medicare is awesome, and it can be difficult to navigate, with ample opportunities to strengthen and improve the program.
We at California Health Advocates (CHA) are passionate about working to make Medicare better for all our California beneficiaries and their families. We do this in three primary ways: educating people on their entitled Medicare benefits and rights and how to use them; advocating on the state and national level on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries and their families for improved benefits, rights and protections; and providing technical support and training to professionals who work one-on-one with beneficiaries, including the state’s Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP).
If you and/or a loved one enjoys the benefits of Medicare, AND the freedom from understanding those benefits and peace of mind knowing you’ve got an awesome team of passionate people at CHA advocating for you and Medicare’s betterment, we invite you to celebrate with a donation to CHA today! 🙂
Thank you in advance for your support. We hope you and your loved ones are enjoying a safe, healthy and wonderful summer full of many magical moments.
