Each year, more and more older adults are making a positive impact throughout California. As volunteers, employees, employers, educators, mentors, advocates, activists, artists and more, they offer insight, wisdom and experience that benefit the entire community. That’s why Older Americans Month (OAM) each May has been recognizing the contributions of this growing population for 56 years!
At California Health Advocates, we have the profound pleasure and honor to work with so many deeply committed, engaged and passionate older adults volunteering as Senior Medicare Patrol Liaisons in their communities. They work to empower and educate their peers about Medicare fraud and how to protect themselves, detect and report it. May is Older Americans Month (OAM) and is a time to celebrate our volunteers and all the older adults in our lives and communities who are making a difference in so many ways!
Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM also provides resources to help older Americans stay healthy and independent, and resources to help communities support and celebrate their diversity.
This year’s OAM theme, Connect, Create, Contribute, encourages older adults and their communities to:
- Connect with friends, family, and local services and resources.
- Create through activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
- Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.
Join us at California Health Advocates in celebrating all the older adults in our lives and communities. You can also visit the official OAM website for ideas and inspiration on how to get involved. The presence, gifts and contributions of our older adults benefit all of us and help create stronger communities for us all to thrive.
