Having Trouble with Your Nursing Home? Learn Common Problems & How to Resolve Them

California Health Advocates > Fraud & Abuse > Having Trouble with Your Nursing Home? Learn Common Problems & How to Resolve Them

Posted by Karen Joy Fletcher on February 4, 2019

Can a nursing home deny needed therapy services? Evict a resident for being “difficult”? Limit family members and friends to specified “visiting hours”?

These are all good questions and unfortunately point to many common nursing home practices that are, in fact, illegal. Even the supposedly “good” nursing homes often follow procedures that violate federal laws and harm residents. Knowing your rights and having the tools to make sure nursing home staff and management follow the law can make all the difference.

That’s why Justice in Aging wrote and recently updated this resourceful guide, 25 Common Nursing Home Problems and How to Resolve Them. The guide introduces each common problem by identifying a false statement commonly made by nursing home staff, and then provides a clear statement of the relevant law. It also addresses additional problems, discusses issues in greater detail than the first edition and includes recent revisions to federal regulations and guidance. Please review and pass on to others who will benefit from this knowledge.
