A nonpartisan link to thousands of Californians with developmental and other disabilities, people with traumatic brain injuries, the Blind, the Deaf, their families, community organizations and providers, direct care, home care and other workers, and other advocates.

California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP)
1-800-289-6574 A health insurance program for Californians who are unable to obtain individual coverage, such as people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

California’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (CalABLE) Program
This program allows qualified people with a disability to establish a tax-advantaged savings account and save up to $15,000 a year with a max of $100,000 without losing critical public benefits, such as SSI or SSDI. Contributions can be made by family members, friends and/or the individual themselves. Also, earnings in these accounts are not subject to federal or California state income tax, as long as they are spent on qualified disability expenses. See calable.ca.gov for more information.

An online resource for people with disabilities that includes program information on employment, education, housing, transportation, health, income support, technology, independent living and civil rights.
Disability Benefits 101
A comprehensive site that provides rules for health coverage, disability benefits and employment programs for people with disabilities.
Disability Rights Advocates (DRA)
510-665-8644 A nonprofit law firm that works to protect and advance the civil rights of people with disabilities. DRA does not charge clients for its services, such as advocating for disability rights through high-impact litigation, as well as research and education.

Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP)
1-800-434-0222 Free counseling about Medicare, Medigap policies, Medicare Advantage (formerly known as Medicare+Choice) plans, filing an appeal and long-term care insurance.
Independent Living Services of Northern California
1-800-464-8527 Provides referral services and information about assistive technology, peer advising, on-site evaluation for compliance with Title 24 of the California Building Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessible Guidelines (ADAAG), housing and community resources lists, advocacy and independent-living skills training.
Medi-Cal
Information on eligibility, application process and services offered through the state’s Medicaid program. Provides a listing of California’s county social services offices.
National Council on Disability (NCD)
Washington, DC: 202-272-2004 NCD is an independent federal agency that makes recommendations to the president and congress, and promotes policies, programs, practices and procedures that guarantee equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
Social Security Administration (SSA)
